Sundays at the Whippet
Sunday Lunch & Roast in York
The best way to round off your weekend: a proper Sunday roast built on 16-hour slow-cooked aged Yorkshire beef, mountainous Yorkshire puddings and all the trimmings — on the cool, edgy, adults-only side of the Ouse. Escape the ordinary.
Our Sunday roast
Sunday is the one day the kitchen slows right down. Our signature roast leads with a 16-hour slow-cooked, roasted peppered rump of aged beef, served pink with a proper Yorkshire pudding and Yorkshire ale gravy — because around here fat = flavour and we'd rather do one roast brilliantly than six of them adequately. Not a beef night? There's a brandy-and-thyme poached chicken and a puff-pastry wellington of mushroom and puy lentils (happily vegan or vegetarian), and the roast potatoes, honeyed carrots, braised red cabbage and three-cheese cauliflower cheese come with every plate. The full menu — starters, mains, all the accompaniments and desserts — is laid out in proper crawlable detail below.
If the weekend calls for a steak instead, our signature cuts have their own home on What's Your Beef →, and there's a sommelier-selected wine list → to pour alongside the roast.
Booking
Sunday tables go quickly, so it's worth booking ahead — especially for a group. Book a Table → to lock in your roast, and if you're marking a birthday, an anniversary or a get-together, our Celebrations & Group Dining → page covers larger parties. Remember we're an adults-only dining room (over-14s only) — a grown-up, unhurried Sunday, exactly as it should be.
Times
Sunday roast is served from 12 noon every Sunday, right through the afternoon — the live menu below shows the current service window, and it's always best to confirm your sitting when you book. We're on North Street, a two-minute walk from York Minster in the heart of the city centre. Back up to the Food & Drink hub → for the full picture, or find us and get in touch →.
